HASTINGS – Jewell, Kansas native Michael Saint has been named head coach for the Hastings College Shotgun Sports team Athletic Director B.J. Pumroy has announced. Saint comes to Hastings College following a successful collegiate career at Fort Hays State University.
“When I was first offered the job I was excited,” Saint said. “This is a sport I’ve competed in since I was 12 and now I’m excited to compete as a coach for Hastings.”
Saint brings a very similar collegiate experience that Jeffrey Proctor brought with him as he helped the 2019, 2018 and 2016 Fort Hays State Shooting Teams to SCTP Division II National Championships and the 2019 ACUI Division II National Championship. Saint was named 2018 NRA All-American Shooter
“I have a lot of goals for Hastings College Shotgun Sports,” Saint said. “There are many excellent shotgun programs in Nebraska and my first goal for Hastings is to be competitive and win against these teams. My experience at Fort Hays has given me a lot of knowledge about what it will take to accomplish this. Some of this experience is shooting as a team. A lot of shotgun sports are shot as an individual, so setting up that teamwork and having everyone drive their teammates to shoot better and help them accomplish their goals will be key to team success.”
Saint’s connection with legendary Fort Hays coach Dr. Duane Sheperd will certainly be a positive. His ability to teach college students the basics such as range etiquette, safety and proper shooting stances for shotguns, handguns and rifles.
“Michael Saint’s background and mentorship at Fort Hays has given him the background to move from a successful competition career to a successful coaching career,” said B.J. Pumroy, Hastings Athletic Director. “Coach Jeffrey Proctor helped elevate our program as our first full time shotgun sports coach. I fully expect our team will continue to improve and succeed with full time leadership from Coach Saint.”
Saint also has experience with organizing practices, travel schedules and recruiting. He has recruited extensively in Ohio, Nebraska and New Mexico from 2017-2020. With his extensive background in shooting sports, Saint is certainly a great fit here at Hastings College.
