ALBERT LEA, Minn. – The Warriors had plenty of fight in them Saturday night, but once again the Waldorf hockey team came up short.
Battling Midland in a non-conference contest for the second straight evening, Waldorf stayed close throughout but fell 5-1 in a battle of Warrior teams.
Midland swept the two-game, non-conference series between Midwest Collegiate Hockey league foes as the weekend series was the season opener for both programs.
Both teams traded chances in the opening period at the Albert Lea Ice Arena on Saturday, with Midland breaking through 5 minutes, 3 seconds into the action.
The score held fast at 1-0 into the second period when the visiting Warriors added two more for some breathing room, then a goal midway through the third for Midland effectively iced the outcome.
Waldorf (0-2-0 overall) never quit, though, getting on the board with 2:12 left in the game when Gustaf Warnelius scored off assists from Sean Mallonee and Morgan Sweeney.
A final late goal by Midland rounded out the scoring on the night.
Dominic Lamanno and Ryall Purdy split time in goal for the Warriors with Lamanno making 19 saves and Purdy stopping 23 shots in the contest.
Waldorf is back in action Sunday as the Warriors host the University of Mary in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
