CHADRON – The athlete with the fastest time in all three sprints at the Wyoming State Track and Field Meet this spring and a Nebraska athlete with the state’s longest triple jump during the season are among Chadron State College’s recruits for that sport, coach Riley Northrup has announced.
The sprinter is Brodie Roden of Riverton, who was named the 2018 Gatorade Wyoming Boys Track and Field Athletic of the Year.
At this year’s state meet, Roden set the Riverton school records of 10.98 in the 100 meters, 21.94 in the 200 and 48.78 in the 400 while posting the fastest time in each event. His 400 time also is the Class 3A state meet record.
Roden was undefeated in all three races this spring and was selected the Student of the Year by the Riverton High staff members. Besides running track, he also plans to play football at Chadron State. He’s 6-foot, 175 pounds. He played wide receiver and safety for the Wolverines.
Joss Linse of Platteview posted Nebraska’s best triple jump of 47 feet, one inch this spring. It came at the Class B-2 District Meet, where he also won the long jump by going 22-½. He triple jumped 45-11 ½ at the state meet to win the Class B championship and rank third in the all-class standings.
Linse also earned academic all-state and has been accepted into the Rural Health Opportunities Program at Chadron State beginning this fall.
Besides Roden, several other promising track and field athletes from Wyoming will be joining the Eagles for the 2019 season.
They include Miranda Gilkey of Lusk, winner of the Class 2A high jump at the state meet this spring with a mark of 5-2, and Mikalah Jones of Glenrock, who won the 2A discus at 118-6.
Gilkey had a season best of 5-4 in the high jump and also went 16-3 in the long jump and 35-6 in the triple jump. Jones had a best of 34-2 in the shot put.
Boys coming to CSC from the Cowboy State also include Chancy Hunt of Big Piney, who was third in the Class 100 meters and the runner-up in the 200 in Class 2A at the state meet. His best times were 11.05 and 23.06.
Northrup also signed Ismael DePaulitte of Pine Bluffs, who was the Class 2A silver medalist in the long jump at state and had a season-best of 22-1.
Brock Voth of Berthoud, Colorado, who has triple jumped 43-7, also will be a freshman at CSC this fall.
The Eagles also have signed two Florida athletes. Samuel Gardner of Immokalee had times of 10.93 seconds in the 100 and 22.37 in the 200 and Raheem Alford of Belle Glade, who shows great promise in the high jump.
Northrup said Alford’s high jump best is 6-5, but after watching a video of him make some amazing basketball dunks, the coach believes Alford has the potential to go considerably higher.
Two male throwers also are on the Eagles’ list of recruits. They are Norman White of Mobile, Alabama, who has sailed the discus 148-10 and Jordyn Spencer of Loveland, Colorado, who has hit 139-1 in that event. White also plans to play football at CSC.
Another intriguing recruit is Payton Stein, a May graduate of Northwest High School in Grand Island, Nebraska. His family has strong ties with Chadron and Chadron State College.
Northrup said young Stein projects as a promising multi-events athlete. His father, Kevin, is a former CSC quarterback and is the Northwest football coach. An uncle, Chris Stein, is the CSC football team’s offensive coordinator and his grandfather, Dick Stein, was the head football coach at Chadron High School for 21 years and has often operated the scoreboard at Chadron State football games since retiring from coaching.
In addition, Payton’s aunt, Lisa Stein, is the director of admissions at the college and helped persuade her nephew to enroll at Chadron State.
Last fall, the Eagles also signed Harley Rhoades of Douglas, Wyoming, who primarily ran the sprints in high school and is moving up to run middle distances in college. Both of his parents, Jay and Angela, were outstanding athletes at Chadron State and now coach football and volleyball at Douglas High.
Last week, the names of six freshmen who will run cross country and distances for the Eagles also were announced.
